Assigment 2

http://602855.glogster.com/english/

·         The pictures of the fish (spring salmon or Chinook salmon, both the same type of salmon) represent what type of life they had fishing for the salmon to make a living. The pictures shows how something can be so living one day but then be dead the next. Just like in Carl Heins case, he was living and fishing one moment and the next be swept of his boat to his death
·         The Japanese flag shows how the Japanese’s-Americans had to struggle during and after war time. They were put through the pain of being uprooted from where they lived to be sent to an internment camp in the middle of nowhere away from other citizens so that they didn’t pose any threat. The flag also represents the pain that Ishmael had when he had to fight against the Japanese at the Battle of Okinawa.
·         The gill netter (boat) shows how Carl, Kabuo and many others made their living throughout the years. Carl was put through the pain of being swept away and dying. Kabuo was not allowed to do what he loved because he was accused of murdering Mr. Heine. The pain Kabuo had and his family must have suffered due to the fact that he wasn’t able to provide for his family during the trial.
·         The quote on the left shows how they didn’t really want to be Japanese in America, because of the hate the people had after Pearl Harbor. They suffered pain, mostly mentally because of societies views on how a Japanese could be with an American.
·         The quote on the right explains that the whole island would suffer because of Mr. Heins death. The whole island loved him for what he did, he was a great and loved gillnetter.

Mind Map

I couldnt figure out how to add the photos straight into the mind map

Journal week 2

Journal 2
Our group had a better discustion this week, as we read from chapter 5-8.
We discused how its a bit difficult to follow the present to past back to present. Its not always clear that they are going back and forth. We discussed on how they came to San Piedro.
We discussed how that the court case could be a source of conflict between the Japanese-Americans and the Americans, because they start talking on how when the Japanese-Americans are forced to leave that Mrs. Heine sells theyre land and that they didnt like that very much.
We discussed how when Ishmael and Hatsue kiss at 1st its was awkward and then it was serious, we were disscussing how it could potentialy have so much controversy, just over a little thing like a kiss

Journal week 1

Week 1
Our group, did not have very much of a discustion, as their wasn't much that was happening in Snow Falling On Cedars
We read to about chapter 4-6 given the speed of the reader.
During these chapters, the narrator was building the characters identity.
We didn't find much of anything that was a link to violence, conflict, darkness and destruction. However we found a little connection to ''Pain''.
The connection to pain, we discused would be the emotional pain that the death of Carl Heine put on his family, through the court battle and when they found out he had passed. We discused pain may have been a factor when Carl Heine was ''killed''.
